Nigerian Police, Onitsha Command, Anambra, have arrested a notorious robbery gang’s leader identified as Onyebuchi Ibanu Umemo, also known as Alamo, whose gang has allegedly been terrorising inhabitants of the city.
The arrest by a combined team of policemen attached to the Central Police Station, Onitsha, and vigilante operatives, followed a distress call over a robbery incident at Egerton Road, Onitsha, where hoodlums, armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, were attacking and robbing innocent citizens of their belongings, Vanguard reports.
It was gathered that the team, on arrival, spotted Alamo robbing victims and when the operatives advanced to effect his arrest, he threatened to cut one of the vigilante operatives with a machete.
However, the operatives resisted and shot him in the leg.
Similarly, detectives from the CPS have arrested another set of gangs that specialise in using tricycles to terrorise Onitsha residents.
According to a source, the gangsters, usually armed with machetes, block their victims with tricycle before robbing them.
The Divisional Police Officer at CPS, Ikechukwu Egbochukwu, confirmed the arrest, but referred newsmen to Police Headquarters, Awka, for details.
He said Alamo was at an undisclosed hospital, following the gunshot injury he sustained while struggling with the operatives.
