Governors of the 36 states have begun move to harmonize their positions on the recent Bills passed by the National Assembly to amend some sections of the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.
This is just as they have moved to prevail on the National Assembly to revisit issues around devolution of powers to states and restructuring being canvassed across the country.
The Governors are also not comfortable with the limited amendments, as they also want the National Assembly to take holistic approach to the amendments which will take into consideration, ongoing agitations or restructuring of the country.
Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum ( NGF) and Governor of Zamfara state, Abdulaziz Yari, disclosed this early Thursday, at the end of its extra- ordinary meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to him” There are so many issues of national interest, devolution of power, political agitations, etc, were not taken into considerations in that amendment.”
“We as governors we are looking as important so that will be taken as interest of the nation as leaders so that we can move the country forward.”
The meeting, Business Day, gathered, was convened to review the latest positions canvased by the National Assembly on amendments of Nigeria constitution.
The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu had briefed the governors on the constitution review from the position of the Senate.
” We decided to hold this extra ordinary meeting so that we could deliberate on he issues.
“We had actually wanted to invite the Conference of Speakers so that we can collectively look at what was submitted for the betterment of the nation. As we agree the constitution is being amended for posterity and not for any other interest”
“Therefore, the information we are having from the House of Representatives is that the position is Senate position, it is not harmonized.
